Now operated by the Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro public school systems, the successful Tom Harris Mentorship Program was originally launched by Valley Alliance for Education (VAE). VAE remains connected in the process of engaging area businesses and non-profit organizations to serve as mentors for high school students.
Mentorship offers students real-world experience in a field of interest. The environment of each work location provides valuable insights for students, and mentor evaluations offer another opportunity to see how the work world differs from the classroom.
Individual mentors have an opportunity to share their expertise with some of the most talented students in the area, and businesses – in addition to gaining enthusiastic assistance – benefit from an important perspective on the direction of education and generation-specific cultural norms in the 21st century.
If you’d like to join the local businesses that currently offer mentorships to area students, please contact the mentorship coordinator for the associated school division.
